five days of diwali and their celebration

Deepavali or diwali is a hindu festival which is celebrated for five days . Main diwali day is celebrated on kaartik amavasya. Five days of diwali are Dhanteras , choti diwali , laxmi puja , gauvardhan puja , and bhaiya duj respectively. all these five days lies mainly in the month of october or november.

First Day of Diwali - Dhanteras

first day of depavali is known has dhanteras which is famous for shopping of jwellery and crockery. buying something on the day of dhan teras is the tradition and market is flooded with buyers on the day of dhanteras. people clean also their houses on the day of dhanteras and the decoration of home starts on the day of dhanteras. On this day at sunset, Hindus bathe and offer oil lamps with prasada (sanctified food) to Yamaraja (the Lord of Death) and pray for protection from untimely
death.

second day -  choti diwali

choti diwali is also known as Narak Chaturdasi . it is celebrated on the day next to dhanteras or the day befor laxmi puja or main deepavali day. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear. On this day, one should massage the body with oil to relieve it of tiredness, bathe and rest so that Diwali can be celebarated with vigour and devotion.

Third day - laxmi puja

This is the day when worship unto Mother Lakshmi is performed. Hindus cleanse themselves and join with their families and their Pandit (priest) and they worship the divine Goddess Lakshmi to achieve the blessings of wealth and prosperity, the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. people send wishes to friends and families on the occassion of laxmi puja. you can get happy diwali sms in english and hindi here

fourth day - gauvardhan puja

on fourth day of deepawali, Govardhan Pooja is performed. Many thousands of years ago, Lord Krishna caused the people of Vraja to perform Govardhan Pooja. From then on, every year Hindus worship Govardhan to honour that first Pooja done by the people of Vraja. People create design patterns called Rangoli on the floor using coloured powders or sand.

fifth day - bhaiya duj

The fifth day of the Diwali is called Bhai teeka. This is the day after Goverdhan Pooja is performed and normally two days after Diwali day. It is a day dedicated to sisters. Many moons ago, in the Vedic era, Yama (Yamraj, the Lord of death) visited his sister Yamuna on this day. He gave his sister a Vardhan (a boon) that whosoever visits her on this day shall be liberated from all sins. They will achieve Moksha or final emancipation. From then on, brothers visit their sisters on this day to enquire of their welfare.

This day marks the end of the five days of deepavali celebrations. This is also known as Bhai fota among Bengalis. Bhai fota is an event especially among Bengalis when the sister prays for her brother's safety, success and well being. On the last day of Diwali, brothers visit their sisters and give special presents to them.

Our country India is known to be the country of festivals. India is a secular country and people of various regigions live here peacefully. Every religion has its own set of festivals that the entire nation celebrates. Here we will discuss  about Diwali festival in briefDiwali is the most auspicious and colourful festival of Hindus celebrated all over the world. Diwali is also known as the festival of lights.  Now a days social media like facebook , twitter and whatsapp  are full of diwali wishes in the month of diwali. In india deepavli is celebrated on Karttika Amavasya which is on thursday october 23, 2014

Story behind celebration of diwali

The most well known story behind Diwali is in the Ramayana, the great Hindu epic. According to Ramayana, Rama, the prince of Ayodhya was ordered by his father, King Dasharatha, to go away from his country and come back after living in the forest for fourteen years. So Rama went on exile with his devoted wife Sita and faithful brother, Lakshmana. When Ravana, the demon king of Lanka abducted Sita and took her away to his island kingdom of Lanka, Rama fought against and killed Ravana. He rescued Sita and returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years. The people of Ayodhya were very happy to hear of their beloved prince's homecoming. To celebrate Rama's return to Ayodhya, they lit up their houses with earthen lamps (diyas), burst crackers and decorated the entire city in the grandest manner.
This is believed to have started the tradition of Diwali. Year after year this homecoming of Lord Rama is commemorated on Diwali with lights, fireworks, bursting of crackers and merriment. The festival gets its name Deepawali, or Diwali, from the rows (avali) of lamps (deepa) that the people of Ayodhya lit to welcome their King.
Days before the festival, people white wash and decorate their homes, offices and shops. On the night of Diwali, Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and prosperity is worshipped.
After puja sweets are distributed, and gifts are exchanged by near and dear ones. In short, it is a happy occasion for everyone.
